This song was the driving force behind me making this record. In it I found a story that I didn't know I had inside of myself and one that has taken me a while to understand.... It's about learning not to leave.
This was the first song we recorded and this goes back to July, 2013 (it was finished after the last of the solo sessions we did a year later in July, 2014). I used engineer Jerry Lejeune's advice for this recording and kept the studio session with the band to acoustic guitar and vocals. That way I feel I was able to get the focus on the feel and the vocals on this song in a way that I would try to emulate through the rest of the sessions. I added the electric guitars later and found that we had really captured the song's vocal quality and band presence. I was originally going to have a Hammond B3 on this track but the Les Paul kind of took over once I gave her a chance. Frank Kincel is on Drums and Lee Zeno on Bass - they nailed it, of course. I'm not going to be able to put this one in a genre for you guys so - good luck with that! Let me know what you think of it. Come Back next week for another tune!
What I Came Here To Do Written By: Marty Christian
I could leave everything behind and start talking about the past. But, I can’t get it off of my selfish mind the things that I never could ask. And it would be every day that I think about trying to move on.
But that ain't what I came to do That ain't what I came here to do I came here for you
Just hold my hand, Baby, until it all washes away. There’d be nothing I’d rather see then your smiling face again. And I could tell you: “Don't you ever give up on your dreams” and: “It’s not as bad as it seems”. “You can just work it all out for yourself.”
But that ain't what I came to do That ain't what I came here to do I came here for you
And people will ask me their silly questions but they wont know what to do when I give them my simple answer that says “Go on, I ain’t got nothing else to say to you”
So don't tell me I was wrong for leaving again I know I just don't belong but I don’t know any other way to live
That ain't what I came here to do - and I hope its enough That ain't what I came to do I know its gonna’ be rough But. that ain't what I came here to do I just came here to leave with you
