Marty Christian has been working with youth through after school workshops in his club, Mardi de Musique since 2011. Through these workshops, students learn about the history of the Blues and how it relates to Louisiana music in French and English through the genres of Zydeco, Cajun, Swamp Pop and Rhythm and Blues. Students then participate in songwriting workshops and participation through playing washboards (frottoirs) and other instruments.
Mardi de Musique students performed around Lafayette, LA at Festival International, the Acadiana Center for the Arts and for the Louisiana French High School Teachers conference. They also collaborated with esteemed musicians in the region such as: Carol Fran, Bobby Michot and Lee Zeno.
From 2018-2021, Marty taught at the University of Louisiana as an adjunct instructor in the Traditional Music Department. There he taught a group of students about the many ways Blues could be performed in ensembles or as a solo artist as part of their graduate degree program. Students performed at Festival Internatuonal and other venues and recorded a live video at KRVS-FM.
Mardi de Musique now lives on with Marty in New Orleans as he continues to play Blues, write songs and organize performances and workshops for youth in libraries and schools throughout Louisiana.
